In this controlled experiment, we isolated a single agricultural \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003evariable, the pruning of the trees, to ask how it influences yield and cup quality.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003ePruning is the selective removal of certain parts of a plant, such as branches or roots, to \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eimprove its health, growth, or productivity. Pruning does two things at once. It renews and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003erejuvenates, forcing the new fruiting wood that next year's crop will occupy, and it regulates, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003ecapping how much the tree is allowed to carry so the vegetative and reproductive sides stay \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003ein balance. Everything else is a consequence of getting that balance right. Left unpruned, an \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eageing coffee tree loses its lower and inner production and concentrates its crop in a young, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003ewell-lit shell at the top and outer edge, lowering productivity and quality.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eFor this release, we compared two management histories on the same variety, grown side \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eby side under identical conditions. One shaped for six years by the POMA Pruning System, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003ethe other left on a traditional schedule with biennial topping and low intensity pruning, with \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003estumping pushed off for a few years more but to come. Same genetics, same climate room, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003esame everything except how each tree had been pruned.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eInside the box you'll find two versions of the Rume Sudan variety, grown side by side in the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003esame climate compartments.
